| Believing
that experience is the best teacher, our ECO Journeys
curriculum requires students to immerse themselves in the environment,
creating the opportunity to cultivate broadened perspectives.
We believe that it is important to form long-term relationships with
the groups and individuals that participate in one of our field immersion
experiences. The impact of participating in an field program can be
powerful and we want students to walk away with a greater understanding
of themselves, of others, and of the world around them. It is
for this reason that each program requires a six to nine month commitment
from the group leader. We work closely with each leader to make sure
that they are supported and prepared for their program.
Set
the Stage
Get your students excited during fun, educational, and informative pre-program
workshops. Group leaders receive an ECO Planner, or preparation kit,
to walk you through every step of the planning process. In addition,
our curriculum can be tailored to your specific needs and time constraints.
Plan on at least one group meeting per month prior to your field program.
Discovery
Programs &
Field Immersion Workshops
Our field programs run from 4 to 14 days, depending on your schedule
and the specific program. Your group will be totally immersed in the
environment and culture of the area. There will be ample time for environmental
exploration, adventure, and reflection. Through
hands-on experiences in science and culture we build critical
thinkers and future leaders.
Discovery Programs are
designed primarily for students ages 11-15. This introductory program
immerses students in marine science, the environment, and local culture
through snorkeling, sailing, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, photography,
research alongside scientists, journal writing and much more! All programs
incorporate debriefing activities that encourage students to apply the
critical thinking skills necessary to value and respect diverse perspectives.
Immersion
Workshops are designed primarily for students
ages 14-18 and is similar in design to the Discovery Program, but broader
in scope and depth of content. Our unique course design provides an
enhanced academic experience by focusing on cultural perspectives and
the complexities involved in natural resource management. In each region,
students will look at one or more resource management questions and
begin to learn about complex environmental decision making.
Wrap
it Up
Each experience culminates in a closing event allowing students to reflect
on their experience and discuss the program. We will share journal entries,
photographs and stories! But the experience does not end here - our
programs impact individuals forever, changing their perspective of the
world around them. We encourage groups to stay involved. We have plenty
of resources to support students in their conservation efforts once
they return home.
